Physiotherapy Services
Our specialist physiotherapy service offers a range of physical programmes.
What We Offer
Physiotherapy programmes are designed to help you with your specific needs and to suit your individual abilities. These include individual or one to one classes and practical techniques as well as prehabilitation and rehabilitation programmes, group activities and chair-based exercise classes.
Prehabilitation
Prehabilitation is a service that enables people with cancer to prepare for treatment through promoting healthy behaviours and through needs-based prescribing of exercise, nutrition, and psychological interventions. It is part of the continuum to post treatment rehabilitation. The aims of prehabilitation are to empower patients to maximise resilience to treatment and improve long-term health. Benefits can be seen in as little as two weeks.
Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation is a service that aims to improve or maintain independence, promote quality of life, and help symptom control to benefit physical function for patients. The physiotherapist will recommend and guide you through physical exercises that are tailored to your individual need and level of fitness. Helping to improve your strength and fitness can help with improving energy levels, managing fatigue and breathlessness, maintaining independence, helping with flexibility, coordination and balance and reducing pain.
Other Services
Group classes, which include chair-based exercise and chair-based Zumba, are more gentle fun exercises mixed with the chance to socialise with other people. Specific physiotherapy applied acupuncture is also available following individual consultation which may help towards easing symptoms of cancer treatments, easing discomfort and providing pain relief.
What Happens Next
Once you are referred to the service, you will be assessed by the physiotherapist and, depending on your need, offered a programme of one to one therapy sessions or group exercise classes. Services are provided at the Cancer Relief Centre, where we have a small onsite gym and a multipurpose room for floor exercises and group classes, as well as in the comfort of your own home should you not be able to access the Centre.
