You know how people often compare making your wishes known to car insurance? It’s a comparison that really helps make sense of it. None of us expects to have an accident, but we still take out insurance so we can move through life with a little more peace of mind. We hope we’ll never need it, but if something unexpected happens, it’s there when we need it most.

Making your wishes known is quite similar. It’s not something many of us like to think about, let alone use. But it can offer a quiet reassurance that if life suddenly takes an unexpected turn, the choices made will reflect what truly matters to us.

So, How Do We Make Our Wishes Known?

A lot of people think this simply means filling out official forms, ticking boxes about treatments they would or wouldn’t want, or making sure legal affairs are in order. But it’s actually much more human than that.

At its heart, it’s about taking a moment to reflect on yourself and your life. What brings you comfort when you’re not feeling well? Who are the people that mean the most to you? And how would you want them to understand your wishes if you weren’t able to explain things yourself?

It’s often about the quieter, more personal things in life, such as:

  • 💛Who you are as a person
  • 💛What makes life meaningful for you
  • 💛What you would want others to know about you
  • 💛How you would want to live your life, right until the end

Thinking Ahead, Even When Everything Feels Fine

It’s easy to think these conversations can wait until much later in life, or only become important when illness enters the picture. But in reality, this can matter to anyone, at any stage of life.

Life can be unpredictable, and having these thoughts and conversations early can make a huge difference. In many ways, it’s even more important to talk about these things while you are well, so they do not become another difficult decision to face during an already overwhelming time.

When you speak openly about your wishes while you are healthy, you are giving the people around you something incredibly valuable: clarity, comfort, and reassurance. It means they won’t be left guessing what you would have wanted if they ever need to make decisions on your behalf. They will already know.

And just like a good insurance policy, the hope is that you will never need it. But if the time ever comes, having these conversations means your voice can still be heard, your values respected, and who you are remains at the centre of your care.
