By Nyree, Dramatherapist, Cancer Relief Gibraltar.

Dramatherapy is one of the specialist support services offered at Cancer Relief Gibraltar, providing a safe and creative therapeutic space for people affected by cancer in any way. As part of the Allied Health Professionals family, Dramatherapy combines psychological understanding with creative methods to help people explore emotions, experiences and personal change.

I have been practising at Cancer Relief Gibraltar for almost a year and am registered in the UK with the HCPC (Health Care Professionals Council) and locally with the GMRB (Gibraltar Medical Registration Board). My work supports children, young adults and adults at any stage of the cancer journey, including family members and loved ones.

What is Dramatherapy?

Dramatherapy is a form of psychotherapy and counselling that uses creativity to support communication, expression and emotional processing. It does not require any acting experience or artistic skill. The focus is on using creative approaches to help people express what can sometimes feel difficult to put into words.

Sessions may include a range of approaches, always guided by what feels comfortable for each person.

These can include:

  • Talking and reflective conversation
  • Movement and body awareness
  • Creative play and imagination
  • Art materials and symbolic expression
  • Story, metaphor and role exploration

Work always begins at a pace and starting point that feels safe and appropriate for the client.

Who can Dramatherapy support?

At Cancer Relief Gibraltar, Dramatherapy supports:

  • People living with cancer
  • Children and young people affected by a loved oneโ€™s diagnosis
  • Partners, relatives and carers
  • Anyone emotionally impacted by the cancer experience

Support can be helpful at any stage, from diagnosis through treatment and beyond.

How can Dramatherapy help?

Dramatherapy offers a therapeutic space to explore feelings, build insight and reconnect with inner resources through creative expression.

It can help by:

  • Providing a safe space to explore and understand emotions
  • Developing self-awareness and recognising how the body responds to stress
  • Expressing difficult feelings through creative materials and methods
  • Gaining new perspective on personal experiences and challenges
  • Building a supportive, non-judgemental therapeutic relationship
  • Creating time to pause and reflect on life changes

Dramatherapy includes many different models and ways of working. My approach is playful, creative and grounded in the understanding that early development and life experiences shape how we respond as adults.

I work in a trauma-informed way and adapt each session to suit the individual. Together, we find the methods and pace that feel most supportive and effective for you.
