Local MOD employee Callum Hassall is an avid fitness fan and is always looking to challenge himself in unique ways. He takes his inspiration from extreme sportsman Ross Edgley and with a bit of encouragement from his girlfriend, he decided to take on an ultimate endurance challenge to raise funds for Cancer Relief.

Callumโ€™s idea was to hike the Med Steps 37.2 times in 3 days to complete a total incline equating to the height of Mount Everest. We were astounded when Callum told us what he was taking on and so grateful that he chose to use this incredible challenge to help us raise vital funds to support our services.

He started his challenge on 30th January and after a few laps he gained the support of his cousin, Corporal Waide Ignacio from the Royal Gibraltar Regiment. Waide offered to do a lap with Callum for some moral support and ended up completing the rest of the entire challenge with him; despite recovering from a knee operation he had the year before. One of Waideโ€™s colleagues had made a ยฃ50 bet that he wouldnโ€™t complete the challenge which gave him all the motivation he needed to prove them wrong. Waide won his bet and donated his ยฃ50 winnings to Cancer Relief.

The dynamic duo started at sunrise and finish at sunset, completing an average of 12 laps per day over the 3 days, raising over ยฃ5,000 for Cancer Relief. We are so grateful to Callum and all who supported him in his challenge. Weโ€™re always humbled when individuals from our community chose us to fundraise for. It goes a long way to helping us continue to ensure that nobody has to face cancer alone.
