Breast cancer remains the most common cancer affecting women. While treatments are advancing and outcomes continue to improve every year, early detection is still our most powerful tool.

Know Your Normal: Be Breast Aware

Being breast aware means understanding whatโ€™s normal for your body and recognising when something changes. Pay attention to any of the following:

  • โžค A new lump or thickening in the breast or underarm
  • โžค Changes in the size or shape of the breast
  • โžค Dimpling or puckering of the skin
  • โžค Nipple changes, discharge, or inversion
  • โžค Redness or rash around the nipple
  • โžค Persistent pain or swelling

Most changes are not cancerous, but they should always be checked by a healthcare professional as soon as possible.

The Power of Screening

Breast cancer screening plays a vital role in early detection. It can identify changes before symptoms appear, often resulting in better treatment options and recovery outcomes.

Attending regular mammograms when invited is key. For those not yet eligible for screening, remaining breast aware and reporting concerns promptly is just as important.

Reduce Risk Through Lifestyle

There are everyday steps we can all take to reduce risk. These include:

  • โžค Exercising regularly
  • โžค Eating a balanced, nutritious diet
  • โžค Limiting alcohol consumption
  • โžค Not smoking

Equally important is open conversation. Talking about breast health helps break down fear and stigma, and encourages more people to seek advice and support early on.
